The Daily Express reports that health experts in the UK have issued a warning about “mouth cancer symptoms” to help detect them early – and one of the main symptoms can be detected when brushing your teeth. The advice comes as the number of cases of mouth cancer hits a record high.

According to the Oral Health Foundation, 31% of oral cancers “occur on the tongue. So a key warning sign to look out for is “white patches on the tongue or inside the mouth.” This can be detected by brushing your teeth daily.
The second most common symptom is the tonsils, accounting for 22 percent of oral cancers. Other affected areas include the lips, gums, roof of the mouth, and the inside of the cheeks. Oral cancer can cause sores in the mouth that don’t heal. Redness or white patches in the mouth, and an unusual lump or swelling in the mouth, head, or neck.
“While many cancers are declining, oral cancers continue to rise,” warns Dr Nigel Carter.
